Piping Plan 52 Set Up (Graphics Courtesy of Hydraulic Institute, www.pumps.org)
Dual mechanical seal with reservoirs can be used with good effect in implementing Plan 52 to provide buffer fluid resulting in no direct leakage of process fluid to the atmosphere.
Circulation between the reservoir and outer seal is maintained by tangential flow porting or by an internal pumping ring. Ideal for process fluids where dilution of the process fluid needs to be minimized but minor leakage to the atmosphere in diluted form may be allowed.
The primary advantage of using Plan 52 is the simplification of eliminating the need to pressurize a Plan 53A system.
Caution: Keep the reservoir/seal pot vent continuously open which is necessary to maintain buffer fluid pressure close to atmospheric pressure. Also important to vent the vapors.
